I go for walks almost daily in El Cerrito for my health. I’m not the only one on foot in El Cerrito. There are lots of people on city sidewalks: seniors like myself, couples, parents with baby strollers, people with disabilities in power chairs, people walking to local businesses. But lots of motorists and property owners seem oblivious to why we have sidewalks, parking on them or letting landscaping obstruct them.
El Cerrito/Richmond Annex Walk & Roll has the word “walk” in our name because we feel that everyone’s mobility needs to be respected. Sidewalks are part of the public realm supported by taxpayers. If you are a motorist, please keep your wheels off the pedestrian right-of-way (above). If you are a property owner, please prune your shrubbery so people with disabilities, families with strollers, or other pedestrians aren’t forced out into vehicle lanes (below).
