OUT IN THE WORLD WITHOUT A CAR: Truckee by train

Biking to Donner Lake

By Steve Price

Without driving a car, Janet Byron (my wife) and I had an adventure heading to Truckee, California, from the time we walked out our front door until we arrived home 5 days later.

We rode the Amtrak California Zephyr from Richmond to Truckee, and rented e-bikes for a day to ride on the Truckee River Legacy Trail, a paved Class 1 bike path that goes into the beautiful surrounding countryside. We also headed in the opposite direction to bike to the far end of Donner Lake. Although the area is a big skiing region, Truckee is investing heavily in bicycling infrastructure to add to its tourism economy. One day we took a short Lyft ride to the Martis Creek Wildlife Area for a stunning walk around a pristine mountain valley. Don’t think that having a car is essential to having a good life, especially if you live in the inner East Bay where BART can deliver you to Amtrak.
